We’re pleased to welcome The Soul Show to the AAPRC lineup. But don’t be fooled by the title… This is an eclectic, re-imagined soul show in every way!
The Soul Show is a progressive music adventure into soul music, its origins, and its derivatives. It’s a weekly three-hour show that covers upwards of five decades of music each week, with center of gravity in the music of the 70’s.
Host and Producer Mike Canton casts every episode as a wide-angle lens on this important American roots music. Canton surrounds the genre, connecting all other music that has influenced soul music, and is influenced by it… Jazz, fusion, funk, ballads, acid Jazz, Latin, Hip-hop, Reggae R&B and more. For music lovers in general and baby boomers in particular, this show is an entertaining (and refreshing) music road trip.
You might hear Robert Glasper, James Brown, Mandrill, Dionne Warwick, Parliament Funkadelic, Lizzo, Jimi Hendrix, Hugh Masakela, Kool & the Gang, Ronnie Laws, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Neville Brothers, Peter Tosh, Janelle Monae, and Meshell Ndegeocello – all in the same episode! And it works.
Mike executes a show with many musical surprises. Part of his mission is to feature the not-so-popular, nevertheless amazing songs of the genre’s legends and lesser known heroes. Mike has great knowledge of soul music’s history and artists which he peppers throughout the show, increasing interest and engagement.
