African-American Stations
African-American public radio stations serve communities that are underserved by commercial radio options. Of the approximately 10,000 commercial radio stations in the USA, less than 1% are owned by African-Americans. Public radio stations serving African-American communities significantly increase cultural, news and information programming for these listeners. Most are Jazz, Jazz and News or Smooth Jazz stations.
70% of all African-American Public radio stations (and 70% of all NPR stations) are licensed to universities. Like other NPR stations, African-American public radio stations attract socially conscious, achievement-focused, culturally aware listeners, who are lifelong learners. Many contribute financially to these stations, by becoming members.
